The Sparrow: A Novel (The Sparrow Series)

A visionary work that combines speculative fiction with deep philosophical inquiry, The Sparrow tells the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who leads a scientific mission entrusted with a profound task: to make first contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life. The mission begins in faith, hope, and beauty, but a series of small misunderstandings brings it to a catastrophic end.

The story of the book was interesting. I appreciated the exploration of several religions, and how Emilio’s role in Jesuit church was more agnostic. The characters were written well. Overall was kind of long and gut wrenching ending

Wow. I had pretty high expectations going in, and it was better than expected. There were some inconsistencies in tone & writing as it went along, for sure. But the story was well handled, and the impact was intense. The last act, especially, was really something. Not in a formulaic way, a twist ending or anything, but just the build-up & release had a lot of impact to it. Part of me really wants to jump right into the second book, and part of me wants to never read it & just let this book stand alone. But anyway, I would definitely recommend this one.

A shockingly brilliant book. I've read it at several points throughout my life and always get something new from it. Incredibly thought-provoking and well-written.
