Overall, the concept is interesting: the ocean is a sentient being who needs drowned souls to... survive? (Never really explained) but she can't drown people herself so she needs sirens to do it for her? There are some plot holes, but it's still an interesting idea. The world building for this was fun. The actual plot less so.

I understand Kahlen and Akinli are young, but they never have a legitimate conversation. There's never any substance to build their relationship upon. Not to mention that Kahlen's love is almost entirely founded in the fact that Akinli simply attempted communication with her and you're going to tell me that no one else has done so in the several decades she's been alive?

The bond between sirens was very cute and endearing, but each individual siren was kind of flat. I couldn't really keep track of which one was which since they didn't seem to have any real defining characteristics and Kahlen was kind of antisocial which limited engagement with the others and subsequently the opportunity to get to know them.

This story drags. Barley anything happens and the romance is so lackluster it might as well have just been a friendship. The concept of siren that are forced to kill people against their will is interesting, but barely explored. It felt more like a cool idea the author had, but forgot to expand upon in any way. I got through this in less than a day because their is nothing of substance to actually sit and think about. You could read thirty pages without comprehending a single one of them and not miss anything.
