An Instant New York Times and USA Today Bestseller

This new hardcover edition of the bestselling The Serpent & the Wings of Night features new case art, and a detailed map!

The Hunger Games meets vampires in this heart-wrenching, epic fantasy romance of dark magic, and bloodthirsty intrigue from bestselling author Carissa Broadbent.

For humans and vampires, the rules of survival are the same: never trust, never yield, and always – always – guard your heart.

The adopted human daughter of the Nightborn vampire king, Oraya carved her place in a world designed to kill her. Her only chance to become something more than prey is entering the Kejari: a legendary tournament held by the goddess of death herself.

But winning won’t be easy amongst the most vicious warriors from all three vampire houses. To survive, Oraya is forced to make an alliance with a mysterious rival.

Everything about Raihn is dangerous. He is a ruthless vampire, an efficient killer, an enemy to her father’s crown… and her greatest competition. Yet, what terrifies Oraya most of all is that she finds herself oddly drawn to him.

But there’s no room for compassion in the Kejari. War brews, shattering everything that Oraya thought she knew about her home. And Raihn may understand her more than anyone – but their blossoming attraction could be her downfall, in a kingdom where nothing is more deadly than love.

The Serpent & the Wings of Night is the first book in the Crowns of Nyaxia series.

This edition features beautiful, brand-new case art and a detailed map of the Obitraes.

Great idea, not fully realized. A world of vampires, where humans are prey...I think. It is unclear if there are parts of this world where humans live safe from vampires. Even in the kingdom where the story takes place I was confused as to whether the humans where slaves, food, or just unlucky to be living in this part of the world. Which is one of the faults of this book, the world building is weak. A young girl, Oraya, is found by a vampire king and brought back to his palace to be raised as his daughter. She is trained to fight and to not trust anyone in her world because they could easily kill her. She has entered a contest, the Kejari, where vampires fight to win a wish from the Goddess, Nyaxia. The interesting part of the story was the idea that a vampire would adopt a human, I wanted to explore that element of the story. So much of the story is spent on the trials of the Kejari. I had reader's deja vu, the story kept reminding me of something else, The Hunger Games. Serpent does not parallel the Games, but it has some very similar tropes. Characters are introduced quickly and then disposed of before the reader has time to sympathize with them. The ending confused me and felt like new elements were added that were not present throughout the story. Overall it was a compelling story, like eating some delicious candy then craving a filling, nutritious salad to counter balance the candy.

I have been sitting on this review for about a week..

I think I am going to settle for 4.5 stars. This was a very good quality fantasy and writing, but I was lost in all the houses, gods, and methods of rule and magic.

That said, I think the book lives up to the hype!

From the moment we meet her, Oraya is fierce and a fighter. We immediately connect with her and root for her.

Although her romance with Raihn initially made me skeptical, I, too, fell for Raihn and his charm.

The Kejari was well-written and kept me on the edge of my seat. I won't say anything so you can experience it.

WHAT IS THIS ENDING ?! I-- NOO, I refuse to believe that happened.

"There she is..." I think I will just be angry with Oraya, her choices, her reasoning, her clarity. I was so invested in each of the characters, that I can't tell you who I'm rooting for. I think, I am angry with the whole cast. My heart breaks for Oraya, making all her decisions with half the information. What a complicated love story.

I'm not one for trial type books, but I really enjoyed this one. Underdog story for sure.
