1927 Mierielle West is a socialite in Los Angeles with her actor husband, Charlie, and two girls. Mierielle is trying to numb the pain of a recent loss when a doctor called to the house for a burn notices a spot on her hand and sends her to the hospital for more testing. Mierielle thinks it's a waste of time, but she follows the doctor's orders. The next thing she knows, she is on a train headed to a leper colony in Carville, Louisiana. She thinks this is a big mistake and as soon things get sorted out, she'll be back in CA. She keeps her distance from the other residents, but soon reality begins to seep in. Mierielle makes a new life for herself and finds her place in the community helping others and building relationships with the residents. Although Mierielle longs to go home, she feels anxiety about her role there and the woman she was vs. the woman she is now.
Be sure to read the author's note at the end. This is a historical fiction novel based on real events and a real leper colony in Carville.
