The One Day You Were My Husband: A Novel

By Rosie Walsh

The perfect book to bring to the ballpark – as seen on NBC Sports Philadelphia & 6abc Action News!

“A love story for true believers. . . Perfection.” Annabel Monaghan

From the New York Times–bestselling author of Ghosted and The Love of My Life comes an unmissable emotional thriller: an up-all-night, page-turning love story with a very dark secret at its heart.

Carrie and Johan marry on a beach in Thailand only months into their whirlwind romance. Carrie, a British surgical intern, is too happy to care that she’s being impulsive. But as the wedding festivities stretch into the night, a group of armed men suddenly swarm the beach, taking Johan away. She never sees him again.

Twelve years later, Carrie is living in the English countryside with her husband, Robin, and their six-year-old twins, running a holiday cottage rental business on the side. One night, she stumbles across an online post in which she discovers that Johan escaped from Thailand years ago, and has been living in Stockholm ever since. As the memories of their passionate relationship flood her, she becomes obsessed with discovering what happened on their wedding day all those years ago.

But just when Carrie thinks she knows what she must do, a shocking twist tears apart everything Carrie thought she knew. The One Day You Were My Husband asks readers what—and whom—they would give up to return to a first love and to the people they once were.

This is the first story that I have read by Rosie Walsh and I have to admit that I lived it, I was transported to Thailand, the sights, the sounds, the smells, to Sweden, the beauty, the cold, the snow and to Devon, the moors, the air, the midnight stary skies. This story starts in 2010 when, on a beautiful beach in Thailand, brilliant trainee surgeon, Carrie Cole, marries scuba diving marine archaeologist, handsome Swedish, Johan Kullberg, a man that she has only know for a few months, the festivities had hardly begun when flashing lights, sirens and screaming shattered the peace, and the blue eyed love of Carrie's life was handcuffed, taken away and sentenced to twenty five years in one of the worlds most notorious jails. The second part of this story starts in 2020, Carrie is now happily married to Robin Carghill, is the mother of twins, Raffy and Maeve, the twins were ultra premature leaving them with health issues, Carrie's decision to give up work to care for them was a no brainer, but the twins were now a disruptive six years old and Carrie was itching to try to get back into surgery, a job that she loved, a job that she was good at.......but her ticket back was to shadow an eminent surgeon that she had worked with before, a surgeon who was now based in Sweden, the home of her ex husband, the husband that she had never forgotten, the husband that she only had for one day. This is a complex story, one that is difficult to put down, the characters are complex, Carrie, a brilliant surgeon but a surgeon with secrets, her beloved father now with dementia, her father's caring partner, her supportive sister with problems of her own and her controlling, manipulative, crusading, mother, a mother with friends in high places and not forgetting her two husbands............but all is not what it seems, people are not what they seem , the twists are brilliant and unexpected. Thank you Pan McMillan and Net Gallery for this great ARC, my review is totally voluntary.
