What should we have for dinner? Ten years ago, Michael Pollan confronted us with this seemingly simple question and, with The Omnivore's Dilemma, his brilliant and eye-opening exploration of our food choices, demonstrated that how we answer it today may determine not only our health but our survival as a species. In the years since, Pollan's revolutionary examination has changed the way Americans think about food. Bringing wide attention to the little-known but vitally important dimensions of food and agriculture in America, Pollan launched a national conversation about what we eat and the profound consequences that even the simplest everyday food choices have on both ourselves and the natural world. Ten years later, The Omnivore's Dilemma continues to transform the way Americans think about the politics, perils, and pleasures of eating.

Pollan is an excellent writer - easy to enjoy, intellectual, spins a good story. This is my 3rd book of his and I've got the message - down with industrial farms..next? Excellent descriptions of organic farm procedures and I LOVED the hunting lunch story...

When I first read this book in 2007, I gave it 4 stars. Since then I've read other books on the farming-industrial complex, and on a reread I found a lot to appreciate about this book in particular. It's a well-researched, thorough look at different ways we can choose to eat an omnivore diet. It talks about the corn industry, the chicken/egg industry, the beef industry, small sustainable farms and farmers' markets, and hunting and gathering in America.

My reread reminded me to pay more attention to what I'm eating since after 10 years I've slipped back a little to including some processed foods in our diet again.

I really recommend this book. It is a dilemma eating meat and this book does explore many questions around food sources, production, treatment, health and processing. I have been considering vegetarianism for a while but have hesitated for a number of selfish reasons. I've mainly tried to reduce my meat intake and this book has sent me further down that path and to really consider how I purchase my food. Totally got me thinking about things and couldn't stop reading... whilst eating popcorn, 2 minute noodles, store bought meat and drinking soda. Will stay in my mind for sure!
