The Marriage: An absolutely jaw-dropping psychological thriller

Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him.

Ten years ago my darling son Jesse was murdered and our perfect family was destroyed. My strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo I carried with me everywhere.

But today I'm finally close to finding happiness again. My ash-blonde hair has been curled into ringlets. Carefully placed white flowers frame my delicate features. The small, drab chapel has been prettied up with white satin, and there are tiny red hearts scattered on the small table where I will soon sign the register with my new husband.

The man who killed my son.

My friends and family can't understand it. My neighbours whisper in the street whenever I walk past. How can I love a man like Tom?

They don't really know me at all...

The most unputdownable psychological thriller you'll read this year from the bestselling author K.L. Slater. If you love The Wife Between Us or Gone Girl, you'll be totally hooked on The Marriage.

Not as thrilling as I thought it would be

Maybe if the book had a different title I would have liked it more. But when you sell a book with a title that uses the words "jaw-dropping " and "psychological thriller", you give the reader--or at least this reader!--certain expectations, and I feel the author failed to deliver on those expectations. I plan on trying another one of Ms Sister's books as I did enjoy the story line.

On a different note, this was one of a few books that I've read where I was disappointed by the book's editing. There were more than a few place where the sentences were awkward or the words used in the sentences made me feel as though I was stumbling my way through them. I love authors like John Hart, where even sentences midway through a paragraph are so eloquent, you have to re-read them to truly enjoy how they sound and the pictures that they paint!

This was AMAZING!
I am a huge fan of K. L. Slater so I had to request The Marriage when I saw that it was being released. Her style of writing is something I really like and every book of hers I have been gripped from early on and this was just the same, I was hooked!
A marriage that many people would say was completely ridiculous. Just ten years from Tom killing his best friend Jesse with just one punch and serving time for it he is out. But while he was inside, he marries Jesse’s mum Bridget!
Now obviously this did not go down well, considering Bridget is old enough to be his mother. Tom’s parents are not happy, Jesse’s son and his mum who had a close relationship with Bridget were not happy about it either. How could she forgive Tom for killing her son? Is what they are wondering.
This is not just a story about Tom and his relationships on the outside world, it is about secrets that have been festering for ten years that come to light in a shocking way.

I just couldn’t put this down; I was on the edge of my seat. I had my suspicions early on of what was going to happen and what this book was about, but what I thought was going to happen certainly did not! There were some huge twists, like immense, shocking, mouth open wide shocks. Especially towards the end. Although I did feel that the ending left me completely satisfied.

It is told from multiple perspectives which were great as I felt I got to know the characters individually and not just from how others perceived them.

A huge 5 stars from me, I really don’t know how K. L. Slater writes brilliant books over and over again. All very much different from one another but she does, she is very talented and I can’t wait to read more from her.

A woman married her son’s best friend, who is also her son’s killer, who is also her best friend’s son. WHAT?? All these damn characters need damn therapy. Jill loves her son, Tom unconditionally. So much so that she continues to see him as a child and not an adult that can make sound decisions. Robert is a terrible father and husband. A terrible person all together. He was so jealous of his son that he HATED him. Nothing Tom did warranted the hatred Robert felt for him. Bridget was more concerned with being likable/a friend rather than a parent. Her relationship with Tom started off as grooming and no one can convince me otherwise. The plot/twist was obvious. It was an okay read.

Tom and Jesse were the best of friends. They met at a very young age, and their mothers became best friends as well. The boys did practically everything together, until one night at a bar, Jesse starts acting strange and starts to fight Tom. Tom throws one punch... which was fatal to Jesse. Tom is sentenced to 10 years in jail. During this time, he reconciles with Jesse's mother, Bridget. It was apparently one heck of a reconciliation because the two marry. As expected, none of their family is happy about the match as Bridget is Tom's senior by 20 years - old enough to be his mother. Jesse's mother, Jill, believes that Bridget has married him with some ulterior motive that involves a sinister plan...

I listened to this book via audible. I was not expecting to find it as interesting as I did, so that was a nice surprise! The Marriage was definitely a roller coaster. I never knew who "the bad guy" was at any given moment. Very well written and thought out. I did not find this book to be at all predictable or take any path that I thought it would. The ending totally blew my mind - I was definitely NOT expecting it.

OK Ending

Left a huge question in my pea brain that I just can't figure out. It was good up until the end. They all can't be winners I suppose.
