This book strike me as a compilation of all those random plot ideas Mankell had, rolled into one complicated story. It was an interesting saga, spanning nearly 200 years and across 4 continents, but I quite frankly can't imagine a follow on story. I suspect this is the last we will hear about Birgitta Rosling. This character was a Swedish judge whose life we observed for several months. She finds out that she is related to some murder victims through adoption and does some amateur sleuthing (which surpasses that of the police in its success) to find the murderer. In doing so, she uncovers more human frailty and political posturing than I would have imagined possible, even after the American election cycle recently completed.
