I'm not going to go too deep into a review for this book. After years of "escaping" her home town, Maggie (and her sisters) returns to Dark Root with news that Sasha, her mother, is really rather bad off. Upon returning to her childhood home, Maggie remembers all the good times she had with her sisters (i.e. Ruth Anne, Merry, and Eve), but also remembers not having a normal childhood. Instead, she remembers all the magic or witchery that her mother forced them to partake in. She remembers being afraid of the dark. She remembers when her older sister, Ruth Anne, left so she could have a normal life. Remembers when her sister Merry left to marry an older man. Maggie has never really believed in magic. She has never believed she is anything special, but her friends and family all seem to believe that their home can't be saved - that good and light in the world can't be protected - if Maggie decides to abandon them when she is most needed. It's a tale of witchcraft, family, love, betrayal, family secrets, etc. I'm only giving this an average rating because it is the first in a series and the author could have gone into so much more depth on the council of witches and warlocks, how the magic system works, and could have gone a little more in depth with the characters as well. That is not to say that this is a bad book! On the contrary, I really rather enjoyed it for what it was and kind of hope that the rest of the series delves in deeper because I found myself enjoying the story and characters despite lacking in areas. I kept on thinking that this would actually make a really good television show and I don't watch much television! Either way, I'm interested in finishing the series.
