The Lost Gate (Mither Mages, 1)

Orson Scott Card's The Lost Gate is the first book in the Mithermages series from the New York Times bestselling author of Ender's Game.

Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself.

He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people.

There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English — but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny's cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see.

Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny as well. And that will lead to disaster for the North family.

I got rather annoyed with this book. The main character Danny started to get on my nerves. Not a fan.

The only reason this book doesn’t have 5 stars is because of how quickly it ended. Danny discovering how to open, close, and lock gates happened only one chapter before he made his Great Gate and his parents went to Westil. That being said, I am VERY excited to read the next in the series, I think it’ll be an awesome ride all the way through

This book did not age well. The premise and plot were very interesting but OSC does more telling than showing. Too much dialogue, too many gay jokes. This book had so much potential, but I couldn't get through the endless narrative of "I can't get Lana out of my head".

Probably never going to revisit this one

Fantasy is not a genre I read much of but I really enjoyed Orson Scott Card's book Ender's Game, so I thought I'd give this one a try. I listened to the audio book and while I didn't love the book, I did enjoy it. The gates were fascinating and the story is pretty good. I liked that the story takes place in current day as well as in ancient times. I'm intrigued to learn what happens next, so I'm sure I'll read the second book in the series but not right away because there other books I'm currently more interested in reading.
