My Review:
I am absolutely obsessing over Jamie Jo Wright’s books lately, after finishing The Bookshop of 99 Doors I knew I needed more! I got on Amazon and instantly ordered a few more of her books. The Lost Boys of Barlowe Theater really attracted my attention as I absolutely LOVE the theater, and the premise pulled me in. I’m so glad I grabbed this one, I absolutely adore it! I honestly feel I could get completely caught up in these “ghost” stories for the next few months and be perfectly happy only reading this author’s work.
In this book, we follow two timelines woven together through mystery, grief, loss, and the haunting history surrounding the Barlowe Theater. Jamie Jo Wright has such a talent for creating atmospheric stories that feel eerie and unsettling while still carrying so much emotional depth and heart. The theater itself almost became a character of its own, rich with secrets, sorrow, and history lingering within its walls.
I loved the characters in this book. Greta was such a strong character, having to endure so much pain and grief and yet having to continue on caring for her brothers while met with poverty and more tragedy and pain. My heart ached for her and her brothers. I was so thankful they had one another to turn to in their grief and pain. It was a beautiful thing to see.
Kit’s character especially spoke so deeply to me. As an adoptee myself, her feelings of abandonment and fear of isolation and of people leaving her was so real and relatable. I’ve struggled with these same emotions all of my life, but never have known how to put my feelings into words. This book put those feelings into words so perfectly, and I loved finding out of the author’s history with adoption. She was able to write from a perspective many don’t have, and I appreciated the honesty of the hard emotions involved in adoption. Yes, adoption is beautiful. But it’s also hard and messy and broken… and ignoring those very real emotions just invokes more hurt and trauma.
I really appreciated how thoughtfully and compassionately these emotions were explored throughout the story. Jamie Jo Wright never shied away from the pain her characters carried, but she also handled those wounds with such tenderness and grace. It made the story feel deeply human and emotionally authentic.
The mystery itself kept me completely hooked. Every time I thought I had things figured out, another layer was revealed. I loved the eerie atmosphere, the whispers of ghost stories surrounding the theater, and the way the tension slowly built throughout the novel. But what truly sets Jamie Jo Wright’s books apart for me are the soft whispers of faith woven throughout the story. They never feel heavy-handed or forced, but instead bring such hope and light into the darkness these characters are walking through. It’s what makes these ghost stories feel so unique and meaningful compared to others I’ve read.
More than anything though, this story was about broken people longing to be seen, loved, and chosen despite the pain they carry. And that hit me deeply. This book was haunting, emotional, atmospheric, and beautifully written from beginning to end. Jamie Jo Wright has quickly become an auto-buy author for me, and I already can’t wait to pick up the next!
I paired the book with the audiobook version and it was an enjoyable experience.
Split time mystery with satisfying conclusions.
