The Little Stranger (Movie Tie-In)

Now a major motion picture—the nationally bestselling and chillingly rendered ghost story—"several sleepless nights are guaranteed" (Stephen King, Entertainment Weekly).
One postwar summer, in his home in rural Warwickshire, Dr. Faraday is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries, the Georgian house, once impressive and handsome, is now in decline. Its owners--mother, son, and daughter--are struggling to keep pace with a changing society. But are the Ayreses haunted by something more sinister than a dying way of life? Little does Dr. Faraday know how closely, and how terrifyingly, their story is about to become entwined with his.

The British-born Writer Sarah Waters’ novel The Little Stranger is a gothic novel set in the late 1940s. The local physician Doctor Faraday is the son of a nursey maid of the Avery family who worked for the family in Edwardian England (Waters 311). The Avery family lives in a mansion that was built in the 18th Century (Waters 59). In the novel by the late 1940s, the mansion is decaying. The Avery family has three family members living in the mansion. One member is Mrs. Avery, the Edwardian lady is the lady of the house. The other family members are two of her children. One of her children is Roderick Ayres who was injured during World War II as a pilot in the Royal Air Force (RAF). The other family member is “Roderick’s sister, Caroline” (Waters 7). In the house is also their dog. A young maid named Betty lives in the house. The Avery family also has a housekeeper that comes in during the day. Doctor Faraday is called out to visit Betty who is feeling sickly. Doctor Faraday becomes part of the life of the family. Doctor Faraday records strange and sinister happening in the life of the mansion. Doctor Faraday might be an unreliable narrator. Waters’ gothic novel is also a social commentary on the changing world of post-World War II England. I thought Sarah Waters’ gothic novel The Little Stanger was a well-done novel.
