The Night Watch

“[A] wonderful novel…Waters is almost Dickensian in her wealth of description and depth of character.”—Chicago Tribune

Moving back through the 1940s, through air raids, blacked-out streets, illicit partying, and sexual adventure, to end with its beginning in 1941, The Night Watch tells the story of four Londoners—three women and a young man with a past—whose lives, and those of their friends and lovers, connect in tragedy, stunning surprise and exquisite turns, only to change irreversibly in the shadow of a grand historical event.

Hmmmm...I really wanted to love this book and in fact, I started out really enjoying it. The book is set in chronological reverse order which was deliciously different. And then the character's lives got dragged on in suspense but nothing ever interesting happened to them. The best part of the book was reliving what it was like in WWII London. It gave me a good perspective as to the horrors of that war for the ordinary woman or man.

Overall it was a chore to read. I could not wait until the story was over so I can move onto bigger and better stories!

Vivid writing but boring for too long and the format didn't work for me. I stopped reading after I read the plot summary on wikipedia. Wasn't enough to keep it going.

Excellent character descx, intriguing storylines, twisting plot and endearing life lessons. Great writing. A welcoming surprise to my expectations for this fiction, with enigmatic characters and historical refs (WWII). Has history, romance, philosophy, sensuality and spark, all wrapped together. The complex lives we lead. Would def recommend.
