The List: A Gripping Contemporary Drama with a Suspenseful Edge, Explore the Dark Side of Online Culture

Ola Olajide, a celebrated journalist at Womxxxn magazine, is set to marry the love of her life in one month’s time. Young, beautiful, and successful—she and her fiancé Michael are considered the “couple goals” of their social network and seem to have it all. That is, until one morning when they both wake up to the same message: “Oh my god, have you seen The List?”

It began as a crowdsourced collection of names and somehow morphed into an anonymous account posting allegations on social media. Ola would usually be the first to support such a list—she’d retweet it, call for the men to be fired, write article after article. Except this time, Michael’s name is on it.

Compulsively readable, wildly entertaining, and filled with sharp social insight, The List is a piercing and dazzlingly clear-sighted debut about secrets, lies, and the internet. Perfect for fans of Such a Fun AgeLuster, and My Dark Vanessa, this is a searing portrait of these modern times and our morally complicated online culture.

Read the ARC. Story just didn’t hit for me. Plot lagged in a lot of areas. Characters were boring. “Best” part was the “villain” reveal at the end.

i apologize in advance if any character names are misspelled, i listened to the audiobook, and didn’t seem necessary to google the names of characters, cause y’all know who I’m talking about ☺️ Ola and Michael are set to get married and suddenly a "list" appears on social media, naming a plethora of "celebrity and influential" men as abusers, in different forms. The plot itself was quick to grasp once the list dropped, but there was no real sustenance between when the list appeared and how Michael ended up on it, the plot just seemed to drag after a while. The revelation of who put Michael on the list, genuinely felt like an afterthought, as if it was rushed the last few chapters; the reasoning behind it was also selfish and narcissistic.

What I liked: A unique plot which highlights the power and danger of anonymous posts on the internet. The audiobook narration is excellent. What I disliked: Although the ending has a twist, I was disappointed. Felt rushed and let down, compared to the rest of the story,

Was a really interesting premise and explored cancel culture from all angles. (This was part of the bundle you gave me for my birthday - finally got to it!)

This story needed to be told. The ripple effect of one action is huge!
