I read this because my 3rd grader and 6th grader both read this at school this year because it's Nebraska Golden Sower nominee for 22-23. My 3rd grader loved it, my 6th grader was a little dubious of the separation-of-nations plot as was I, to say nothing of the ethics of sending orphaned children to Mars when they couldn't consent. But I do love pandemic fiction and this hit that spot nicely even if it was initially only accidentally about a pandemic.
