This is a captivating story about the history of a family and the many connections to that family. I loved the weaving of Russian history with the families history. It had some surprises and also much sadness as a reader can empathize with the loss of a child more than once. It is well written and the imagery of the dolls is vivid.

The use of Russian nesting dolls as a metaphor provides intensity to the narrative, symbolizing the layers of Lena’s lifestyles and the connections between generations. The writing is evocative and wealthy, capturing the nuances of Lena’s emotional struggles and her quest for belonging. The character improvement is strong, with assisting characters that decorate the story and provide unique perspectives on the immigrant enjoy. Content warning for violence, abuse, death, stalking, manipulation, graphic descriptions, and related topics. I really liked pieces of this novel. Particularly, this historical fiction sections. I didn't really like Rosie as a narrator, I felt myself itching to get back to the historical sections. I don't think the modern plot really wrapped up for me, I got the reveal but it was over in a flash and didn't carry the weight that it could have. I liked how the fiction was woven into the moments in history and I absolutely needed to know how it ended. A side note, I had a hard time with the diminutive names. Natalya is the same person as Natasha, Mikhail is Misha, ect. I had to remember to keep those straight. But overall, a really good historical fiction read.
