The Last Mrs. Parrish: A Novel

A mesmerizing debut about a coolly manipulative woman and a wealthy "golden couple," from a stunning new voice in psychological suspense.

Amber Patterson is fed up. She’s tired of being a nobody: a plain, invisible woman who blends into the background. She deserves more—a life of money and power like the one blond-haired, blue-eyed goddess Daphne Parrish takes for granted.

To everyone in the exclusive town of Bishops Harbor, Connecticut, Daphne—a socialite and philanthropist—and her real-estate mogul husband, Jackson, are a couple straight out of a fairy tale.

Amber’s envy could eat her alive . . . if she didn't have a plan. Amber uses Daphne’s compassion and caring to insinuate herself into the family’s life—the first step in a meticulous scheme to undermine her. Before long, Amber is Daphne’s closest confidante, traveling to Europe with the Parrishes and their lovely young daughters, and growing closer to Jackson. But a skeleton from her past may undermine everything that Amber has worked towards, and if it is discovered, her well-laid plan may fall to pieces.

With shocking turns and dark secrets that will keep you guessing until the very end, The Last Mrs. Parrish is a fresh, juicy, and utterly addictive thriller from a diabolically imaginative talent.

Entertaining beach read, mildly suspenseful. 2.5 stars rounded up because it kept my attention during a pandemic. My book club enjoys thrillers and frankly they start to run one into the other especially if they aren’t well written. Without giving away anything the ending is just too buttoned up and the twists are a bit predictable.

I definitely didn’t love this book Spoiler… don’t read if you haven’t finished As someone who underwent psychological abuse and who is now a mother, this book enraged me. And the ending to me was so unsatisfying. It was pandering too much to the appeal of revenge and not logic. Someone who underwent abuse to this degree and then got out from under its reign… and as a mother, you would not be willing to go drop the mic an rub it in their faces because it would risk the long term safety of your kids and yourself… and on top of that, ideally you find your joy in freedom and not find joy in putting another under the same thumb of oppression just perpetuating pain. Of course our egos want to think that revenge feels sweet but it really is so fleeting and not real sweetness at all. Real life brings karma already. I am not referring to allowing them to chart their own demise, I found that the creative part of the story I enjoyed and why it’s not rated lower. But the having to go a confront them to have the last laugh. Again, with a psychotic abuser who’s going to prison but a powerful narcissist, you would not create a reason for them to come after you and your child after prison and you wouldn’t have to have the last laugh with the new wife who, though yes - she’s a terrible person, is being abused now. That’s her karma and she already knows it. Just yuck
