"The Last Flight is thoroughly absorbing--not only because of its tantalizing plot and deft pacing, but also because of its unexpected poignancy and its satisfying, if bittersweet, resolution. The characters get under your skin."--The New York Times Book Review

Two women. Two flights. One last chance to disappear.

Claire Cook has a perfect life. Married to the scion of a political dynasty, with a Manhattan townhouse and a staff of ten, her surroundings are elegant, her days flawlessly choreographed, and her future auspicious. But behind closed doors, nothing is quite as it seems. That perfect husband has a temper that burns bright and he's not above using his staff to track Claire's every move.

What he doesn't know is that Claire has worked for months on a plan to vanish. A plan that takes her to the airport, poised to run from it all. But a chance meeting in the airport bar brings her together with a woman whose circumstances seem equally dire. Together they make a last-minute decision.

The two women switch tickets, with Claire taking Eva's flight to Oakland, and Eva traveling to Puerto Rico as Claire. They believe the swap will give each of them the head start they need to begin again somewhere far away. But when the flight to Puerto Rico crashes, Claire realizes it's no longer a head start but a new life. Cut off, out of options, with the news of her death about to explode in the media, Claire will assume Eva's identity, and along with it, the secrets Eva fought so hard to keep hidden.

For fans of Lisa Jewell and Liv Constantine, The Last Flight is the story of two women--both alone, both scared--and one agonizing decision that will change the trajectory of both of their lives.

This book works as a thriller, but it didn't have enough psychology or realism for me. Eva's side was pretty believable for me, but I don't have any experience with her lifestyle, so maybe that was easier. Claire's story didn't sit quite right with me. For starters, if she wanted to get away from her husband, she really just needed to go to whatever TV station was on the opposite side from him politically. Is he a liberal? Go to Fox. Is he a conservative? Go to MSNBC or Rachel Maddow. Not sure? Contact Hannity, Maddow and Maher all at once. Secondly, she really had no emotional side effects from the abuse other than the fear of being stuck with him and having an "accident" or being put in an institution, and the solution of going to the press fixes those. I was in an emotionally abusive marriage, and her physically abusive one sounds like a cakewalk compared to mine. She did have the emotional part of never having her own life or privacy, but the author didn't really convey the fears or horrors of abuse. Of course, this is a thriller, not emotional literature. BTW, absolutely no way that Claire would have gotten in that black town car.

Liz was my favorite character. The exchange between Liz and Eva on p. 194-5 was superb. Liz's quick description of her ex-husband's anger and masks and her triggers rang true for me, as did Eva's half-truths. Whether it's Eva's drug dealing boss or an abusive spouse, there is always fear in revealing the truths that we live with. I want to be like Liz, the way she explains her happiness and ability to live her dreams on p. 260.

Such an amazing twist! While I don’t typically like books that jump between characters every few chapters, this one did it really well. Building on the story of both women in a way that always keeps you guessing at what might happen next.

The twist was set up perfectly, no way that I could’ve seen it coming!

Captivating and compelling; a treatise on the power imbalance between men and women. I enjoyed reading this and it was a quick read, but I save 4 stars and above for books that move me to my core and while this was good, it wasn’t quite that type of book.
