The Last Contract of Isako

By Fonda Lee

★ AN INSTANT USA TODAY AND INDIE BESTSELLER! ★ A battle-worn corporate samurai undertakes one last mission on a merciless planet where death is always a mere breath away, in this standalone science fiction epic from the author of the modern fantasy classic Jade City. LIVE BY THE CODE. DIE BY THE KNIFE. Isako is a legendary swordswoman, but every legend must come to an end. When her long-time client unexpectedly retires, she plans to follow--to walk out into the frozen wasteland of their planet with her head held high and her family enriched by her death. But when she's offered a final mission, she can't refuse, especially when she realizes who lies at the center of it all: Martim, her last--and worst--apprentice, who's somehow made his way to the top. As she's thrust into a world of corporate espionage and shadowy secrets, what she uncovers could forever change humanity's existence among the stars. The Last Contract of Isako is epic science fiction like only Fonda Lee can write it--set in a world where money trumps loyalty, the elite have the power to extend life or end it, and one woman in the twilight of her calling must decide what's ultimately worth living--or dying--for. ★ "Lee is a master of genre-bending adventure - this may be her best work yet." --James S. A. Corey, author of The Expanse series ★ "With beautifully drawn characters and a plot that grabs you and drags you from one page to the next, this is a must read." --John Gwynne, author of The Shadow of the Gods ★ "Lee brings effortless world building and heartfelt characters to a visually slick space opera that fans of the Green Bone Saga are going to eat up." --Rebecca Roanhorse, bestselling author of Black Sun ★ "A knife-sharp dystopian masterpiece." --Tasha Suri, World Fantasy Award-winning author of the Burning Kingdoms trilogy

Wowza. I had been so excited for this one. I am one of the many, MANY huge fans of Lee's Green Bone Saga, so I mean, come on: cyberpunk space samurai?! How could it get any better? At the 40% mark I was considering giving up. This book had some interesting ideas, but I felt like it was spinning its wheels. I could not imagine how there was 3/5 of the page count left to fill. But I powered on. By the end, it was here as you see it, a four-star read that left my gob slightly smacked. This book was not at all what I expected. Okay, yes, space samurai: true. But this book gets much more philosophical, and is much darker and much more cynical, than I ever anticipated. As with Green Bone, Lee here shows off her particular talent for painting characters in rich shades of gray while still leaving us aching for them and what they have to endure. I will be thinking about these people and their choices for quite a while. If, like me, you find yourself struggling a bit in the first half, all I can say is: it more than paid off for me in the end. (Crossposted from my Storygraph review)
