FAMILY IS DUTY. MAGIC IS POWER. HONOR IS EVERYTHING.

Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for--and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion.

Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon's bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation.

When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone--even foreigners--wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones--and of Kekon itself.

A modern classic and word-of-mouth sensation, Jade City is the World Fantasy Award-winning story of magic and kungfu, where four siblings battle rival clans for honor and power in an Asian-inspired fantasy metropolis.

Praise for Jade City:
"An epic drama reminiscent of the best classic Hong Kong gangster films but set in a fantasy metropolis so gritty and well-imagined that you'll forget you're reading a book." --Ken Liu, Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award-winning author

"A beautifully realized setting, a great cast of characters, and dramatic action scenes. What a fun, gripping read!" --Ann Leckie, Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning author

"An instantly absorbing tale of blood, honor, family and magic, spiced with unexpectedly tender character beats." --NPR

Wow wow wow! I loved this book and I can’t wait to continue on in the Green Bone saga. This reads so much like a movie and it was so rich in details. *chef’s kiss*

I enjoyed the story. There were some really great fight scenes. I think I'll read the rest of the trilogy.

It took me a little too long to get interested in what was happening in this novel. I was more than half way through before I understood what the central plot would be. The tone is very serious and vast. The characters were realistic and flushed out. It is also violent. The magic system is unique, detailed and fascinating. If you like war stories and heavy world building this might be the series for you. I'm not certain I'll read the next one, but I don't regret the time I spent in Jade City.

I think I understand why some people love this book, but it just wasn't for me. This book is purely political intrigue / gang warfare. It was hard to follow along when all the characters have multiple names and I couldn't connect with them enough to care about what happened in the story.

well. all i can say is it's been soooo long since i read something that's so indisputably 5 star worthy WOWWW

i am absolutely obsessed with every aspect of this story, the simply traditional writing style that really sets the tone for the narrative, the pacing and buildup, the masterful world-building (the asian-inspired urban fantasy setting is definitely one of the things i enjoyed most), and alllll of the characters' intros and development being so well-fleshed out and realistic... i don't think i've ever read a book quite like this where neither the characters' actions or the plot supersede or "drive" the narrative, they're perfectly in balance but the story never drags at the same time??? fonda lee you are simply a genius...

the whole time i was reading this book i kept thinking about how perfect it would be if adapted as an animation because it gives me legend of korra vibes (just with more mature themes),, a live action tv show, animated series, idc i need to see it on screen!!!

the way i almost NEVER give five stars to first books of a series... they never compare to the second and third books but now i cannot wait to start the second book because this was already so flawless in every way. highly HIGHLY recommend to everyone, please come talk to me if you want to know more about the book itself!!
