I’m stingy with my 5 star ratings! I could not put it down! I loved the multiple story lines going on in this book and the way that they all intersect. I’ll be coming back to this again and a again.

I might have given it 5 stars had the ending not been so cheesy and tidy. It all wrapped up much too neatly.

Lovely mystery and historical fiction. Morton chooses to spotlight two female characters, an author born during WWI and the other a modern police detective. Alice, the author, is born to privilege and we see her make the foolish mistakes of teenagers while holding fast to her powerful calling to write. Sadie is a young woman with a past and strong moral fiber who has made some missteps at work. The story skips around among timelines, including some departures to Alice's mother's life. And the uniting story is a decades long child abduction (of Alice's baby brother) that binds them all together. Wonderfully crafted, suspenseful, joyful, a delight to read!

I'm always excited to sit down with a Kate Morton book for the first time. This time I pre-ordered the book because I was so excited. And Kate Morton did not disappoint. She delivered another amazing and unique story full of twists, captivating characters and emotional depth.

I usually just fill out the review on my phone. But I have such a rant for this I actually launched Goodreads online.

I hated this book. This has been the most grueling 22 hours of listening to an audiobook. I decided to finish it instead of exchange it because, not only am I out of free exchanges through Audible, but I also got it in a 2 for 1 deal and wasn't sure how that would affect my return.

Here is a comprehensive list of why I hated this book so much.

Terrible characters. No one is interesting.

Since no one is interesting, there is nothing to gain from Sadie's second case or the fact that it "gets resolved". Nor is there anything to gain from Sadie's "relationship" with the child she gave up. Nor is there anything to gain from any of the character's backstories. Who cares about Constance's backstory, or Eleanor's Magical Doorway, or how she met Anthony...

Too many points of views across too many points of time. I'm sorry, but as an adult I literally cannot get into the head space and point of view of a BABY.

The dialogue is dull. The narrative is dull.

I cannot stand the fact that we were introduced to a potential love story between Ben and Alice just for it to turn into Ben and HER MOTHER. You could have had Eleanor have a love affair with literally any other random guy and achieve the same end. But no. It's the guy who her daughter has a crush on. WHAT EVEN.

Also, the detectives literally never thought to read letters and journals of the family members?? They just left them in the house so Sadie could coincidentally read and solve the puzzle herself???????

Don't even get me started on the ending. What an uninteresting and unbelievable ending. Sadie's grandfather? Is Theo? He just happens to remember meeting Eleanor? Thereby giving Alice a wholesome ending in which she can reunite with her long lost brother? The person who HAPPENS to solve the puzzle is actually part of the family line? WHAT ON EARTH IS THIS BOOK IM SO MAD
