What a complex short story! The Knight and the Butcherbird explores how we adapt to fit the world we live in and how we pick up the pieces after the fallout. Our club met to discuss it, and we found ourselves both answering questions and asking even more—drawing fascinating parallels to our society today. We all agreed we would’ve gladly read more of this book. A perfect quote: “That’s how a believer proves his love, blindly, on his knees.”
I loved this story. It was dystopian and fantastical at the same time with a distinctly sorrowful fairy tale vibe. The story was very much The Giver meets Ladyhawke in all the best ways possible. I feel I'm usually a little overly critical of short stories because I usually feel like something is missing, but nothing was missing here, this story was just the perfect amount of detail for a short read.
