I really liked The Jasmine Throne and I was considering continuing the series. But I looked up details of the books that follow--I've had my heart broken before by high fantasy books in the past. I mainly did this because I wanted to know if my fears/suspension were silly or justified. Unfortunately, it seems that I was spot on with some of them. And right now, that's too much to handle. Could I change my mind in the future? Perhaps.
I loved a lot of the elements in this story; magic, complex characters, powerful women, details of a strong lineage yet to be discovered. And I feel I am able to forgive and over look a lot, usually. But Priya's character....everywhere she turned there seemed to be someone there who wanted to use her for their own schemes. Some of this was rectified but other parts felt up in the air. And it hurt, I guess.
I know Malini's complicated past and position in the narrative and I empathized with her but I didn't like her at all. I had more respect and love for Bhumika's character because of her decisive and calculated actions. She still have room to grow but it always felt like she saw the bigger picture more than Priya and definite more than Malini. The more I grew to understand Malini's past and the particular challenges of her brother Chandra, her motivations felt more like spite--no... she was driven to remove him from power because she saw him as evil and corrupt---and he was. But then what? She was the master behind the scenes and had all the ideas....why put in all the effort and put your life and others on the line without opening and rightfully claiming the place as leader? It seemed like EVERYONE knew she was the real brains of the operation.
Idk. I just couldn't help comparing her actions and character to Bhumika
