The Inheritance: A Novel

“What do you get when you pair a wealthy Delhi business owner on the verge of retirement, his three troubled kids, and a remote island? A high-stakes game of greed, of course! . . . Like Succession meets Knives Out, or in other words, an absolute page-turner.” —Marie Claire

“A peek behind the velvet curtain of extreme wealth and privilege.” —The Washington Post

Most family reunions end in tears. This one will end in murder.

Meet the Agarwals, who have gathered on a private, luxury island off the west coast of Scotland for a much-anticipated family reunion.

Raj, the patriarch and a business tycoon, is about to announce to his wife and three children the succession plan for his multimillon-dollar Delhi-based company. Shalini, the fragile matriarch, is ready to have her husband to herself after years of sacrifice to the family business. Myra, the golden child, owner of the island and host of the reunion, is, unbeknownst to her family, on the brink of bankruptcy. Aseem, the son and supposed heir, is torn between his love for his wife and his duty to family. Aisha, the youngest, a party girl whose antics are legendary, can’t pass up an opportunity to wreak havoc. And then there’s Zoe, Aseem’s wife, the outsider whose #InstaPerfect life is built on a foundation of lies.

They’ve all got secrets they would die to protect. Who will survive this high-stakes reunion, and who will become a victim of their own greed? One thing is certain: this family gathering will shatter more than just their illusions of unity.

Murder Mysteries aren't really my thing - this one is an exception!

I love how the story unfolded and the twists that I never saw coming. I enjoyed the drama-forward story, but it got a little heavy handed at times. The author really tried to make each chapter end on a cliffhanger, which got old about halfway through. There was enough drama built in, so those endings felt a little silly, like they were trying too hard.

In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed it though.
I had all kinds of guesses, but did not figure this one out.

Big thanks to Malaprop's Book store in Asheville for their shelf of ARCs !

Unfortunately this is a DNF, did not finish book. It is about rich, entitled children of a man who is about to retire. All of them are greedy and spoiled and hope to inherit a large sum of money. Myra, the oldest, has left the legal profession and her husband and is currently trying to renovate an island in Scotland and turn it into a fantasy getaway destination. She is deeply in debt and her plans to finish rebuilding are in jeopardy. The middle child is disgruntled since after his father's stroke, he was compelled to take over the family business, rather than pursue his own interests. He had worked tirelessly over the past few months to negotiate a deal that would sell the company. His wife, Zoe, a social influencer, is pregnant with their first child. The youngest, Aisha, is a spoiled brat and perpetual screw-up, who has hooked up with a sketchy investment manager, who is obviously out to get the family fortune. Seems so formulaic and contrived. When Papa decides not to sell the company and continue managing things, all the children are disappointed since the division of assets will be postponed. We already have a foreshadowing of some terrible happening since there is a "look ahead" scene at a character making it back to the house all bloodied and terrified. Also, someone thinks they see someone lurking in the woods, on what is supposed to be a deserted island (except for the family gathering.) At this point, I really didn't care what happened to any of them and had no interest in continuing to read.
