The House of Mirth, Ethan Fromme, Summer and The Age of Innocence -- all heart wrenching and all among my absolute favorites. Edith Wharton was an amazing writer.

Lily Bart is a vacuous young woman who knows she needs a husband to survive, but somehow can’t find anyone suitable. I didn’t like the rich society life Wharton describes. Poor Lily - what? She grew up in luxury and goes from relative to relative, doing nothing noteworthy. Are we meant to feel sorry for her plight? No, I’m disgusted by her way of life.
This was not the book for me.

Eventually Lily has a fall from grace her reputation is ruined by a so-called friend who accuses her of having an affair with her husband. Her aunt dies but she cannot get any money until after one year. She goes to work and is miserable. Takes sleeping pills and dies. The one man she loved Lawrence Selden comes to her apartment to propose to her, only to find her dead.
