The Hobbit

Sauron has returned. . . watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 on Prime Video.

The journey through Middle-earth begins here with J.R.R. Tolkien's classic prelude to his Lord of the Rings trilogy.

“A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible... All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts.”—The New York Times Book Review

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." So begins one of the most beloved and delightful tales in the English language—Tolkien's prelude to The Lord of the Rings. Set in the imaginary world of Middle-earth, at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale, The Hobbit is one of literature's most enduring and well-loved novels.

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

I tried to think if I had read The Hobbit when I was younger. I think I started it, but I'm not sure I ever finished it--until now. These days, of course, it is difficult to separate the book from the Peter Jackson movies. I was amazed at how terse the book was compared to Jackson's bloated films. The book felt like a short story in comparison and that made it rather delightful, like a sketch behind which stands the potential of some future painting.

I found it interesting that the smaller action scenes were carried out in full color (the trolls, for instance, or Biblo's escape from the goblin caves), while the larger action scenes were painted in broader strokes. The Necromancer was a mere whisper in the tale, a hint, a subtle implication, and that was it. If you weren't careful, you might miss it.

I'm glad I finally read it, but I definitely enjoyed [b:The Lord of the Rings|33|The Lord of the Rings (The Lord of the Rings, #1-3)|J.R.R. Tolkien|https:images.gr-assets.com/books/1521850178s/33.jpg|3462456] more than I did this tale.

The ending was unexpected. I am so sad now. I will be bawling my eyes out come the third movie. I just know it.

I tried to read this when I was like, ten. I only made it a couple chapters in and gave up, it hurt my head too much. I'm glad I gave it another go.

I love the movies, but I'm torn between them. They are so so so different from the book. I'm mad that they are so different. The book is great. I loved it. But I also love the movies. I'm a bad nerd.

gah!

I want Bilbo to be my best friend.
