The Hiding Place: A Novel

"The Hiding Place is terrific in every way."--Lee Child

From the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man comes an unputdownable psychological thriller about a man who returns home to settle old scores--and uncovers a secret darker than he could have imagined.

Joe never wanted to come back to Arnhill. After the way things ended with his old gang--the betrayal, the suicide--and what happened when his sister went missing, the last thing he wanted to do was return to his hometown. But Joe doesn't have a choice, not after a chilling email surfaces in his inbox: I know what happened to your sister. It's happening again . . .

Lying his way into a teaching job at his former high school is the easy part. Facing off with onetime friends who aren't too happy to have him back in town--while avoiding the enemies he's made in the years since--is tougher. But the hardest part of all will be returning to the abandoned mine where his life changed forever, and finally confronting the horrifying truth about Arnhill, his sister, and himself. Because for Joe, the worst moment of his life wasn't the day his sister went missing.

It was the day she came back.

Tα΄œα΄…α΄α΄Ώ ⭐ ( 8 / 10 ) Sooo, 😢 for me this was a legitimate wtf book, because like a couple others I just jumped into with some suggestions, I didn't read anything about. Heard all good things about it so in I went. First, I'll say I have mixed feelings about it, more good than bad. I went in getting some British form of The Gambler meets One Tree Hill small town living, and left with Stephen King. Which I find hilarious considering in his acknowledgents, He acknowledges King and says he draws inspiration from him. I should think so and if you've read this. Duh. 😬 Things I hated. I. Do. Not. Like. Time jump books, tv shows, movies. Any of it. Hate it. Granted if this for some reason got made into a movie or show Im sure it would be presented kind of like IT is presented on film with flashbacks of adults as children. I'd be ok with that anyway. That was the trigger for me. Also the ending. That was just too much King for me and Im not with it. What I liked? Literally everything else. I had to keep reading despite my timeline loathing because I needed to happen to Annie and Hurst's ass of a self. Would I read it over? Of course it was good. Still didnt like the last 30% though.
