The Great Gatsby

Description
A masterpiece of 20th century literature from F. Scott Fitzgerald, the preeminent chronicler of the Jazz Age--a term he coined.

One of The Atlantic's Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years

This classic work encapsulating the decadence and excess of the 1920s "Jazz Age" follows the unassuming Nick Carraway on his search for the American Dream, which leads him to the doorstep of Jay Gatsby, an enigmatic millionaire known for both his lavish parties and his undying love for Nick's cousin, the married Daisy Buchanan. With a mixture of envy and dismay, Nick observes Gatsby and his flamboyant life in the Long Island town of West Egg, while Gatsby yearns for Daisy and all that shimmers across the Sound in East Egg. The result is a chronicle of the drama and deceit that swirl around the lives of the wealthy, which cemented Fitzgerals's reputation as the voice of his generation.

I didn’t hate it, wouldn’t pick it. I genuinely did like analyzing it for English class tho, lots to unpack

This was the first book to shock me. I'm not sure if it proves I was sheltered or if the scene was just unexpected. Probably the sheltered thing. I guess I should have given it a higher rating becuase of that, but no.

This was a lovely soap opera. As expected. But it was a lot more insightful than I had expected. Gatsby was the ultimate self made man. As his neighbor Nick narrates, we grow to appreciate all gatsby has done. And then things change.

I'm happy I got this one done for the book club night next week (I'm still plodding through Little Women even though that was last month's book).

I have such mixed feelings about this book. It was beautiful writing. I love wading through the sentences and seeing where they would end. But there are zero likable characters in this book. None. I hated all of them.

One of the only books I've ever read more than once. Modern literature at its best, even if we do all have to read it in school.
