The Getaway

“Timely, thrilling, and gripping from start to finish. An absolute page-turner.” --Karen M. McManus, #1 New York Times bestselling author of One of Us Is Lying

Jay is living his best life at Karloff Country, one of the world’s most famous resorts. He’s got his family, his crew, and an incredible after-school job at the property’s main theme park. Life isn’t so great for the rest of the world, but when people come here to vacation, it’s to get away from all that.

As things outside get worse, trouble starts seeping into Karloff. First, Jay’s friend Connie and her family disappear in the middle of the night and no one will talk about it. Then the richest and most powerful families start arriving, only... they aren’t leaving. Unknown to the employees, the resort has been selling shares in an end-of-the-world oasis. The best of the best at the end of days. And in order to deliver the top-notch customer service the wealthy clientele paid for, the employees will be at their total beck and call.

Whether they like it or not.

Yet Karloff Country didn’t count on Jay and his crew--and just how far they’ll go to find out the truth and save themselves. But what’s more dangerous: the monster you know in your home or the unknown nightmare outside the walls?

Flipping crazy!!! Needed more narratives, but pleasantly disturbing nonetheless.

I was a bit all-over-the-place with this one. At first, I wasn't into the "YA-ness" of it. But since this was a book club selection, I couldn't exactly DNF. The more I got into the story, the less distracted I was by it's "YA-ness". It's got a lot going on once you get past the first few chapters. There's a bit of everything for dystopian, socio-political, horror fans. In no particular order, there's classism/elitism, systemic racism, excessive (almost gluttonous) capitalism/consumerism, propaganda, greed, power struggle/revolt/resistance/up-rising, colorism and post-colonial trauma. Oh, and it's sprinkled with some violence (beware if that is triggering...). Told from multiple POVs, the story centers around an amusement park/resort owned and operated by a powerful family. Four teens are connected in different ways to the park. At first, everything seems normal; perfect even. But when one of the four and her family disappear, the seeming perfection of the park begins to peel away. What is revealed is a sinister plot to cleanse society with the capital being the park. But who is the bad guy? What are people willing to do to get ahead? To survive? Those who like The Handmaid's Tale, 1984, Animal Farm, or Westworld may find this to be a page-turner.
