The Garden Within by Dr. Anita Phillips is such a powerful read. It is a book that commands you to stop and think, take stock of your life and your needs, and listen to your body and embrace your emotions. Dr. Phillips brilliantly compares the body and our emotions to a garden that needs to be tended to in order to grow. Her biblically-based insights encourages us to lean into our emotions in order to live a more fulfilling life, to have a more fulfilling relationship with God.
“Your emotional well-being won’t affect how God shows up for you, but it might affect how you show up for God…” this quote from Dr. Phillips beautifully sums up her overall message. The Garden Within is a book to not be read in one sitting but should be referred back to time and time again.

2. It’s been quite some time since I’ve had to pull out my highlighter and pen to take notes and emphasize certain passages while I’m reading…
The Garden Within was a lesson, and I was the student following along and taking notes. We are allowed to experience every emotion, when and however it comes to us. God allows us to have that full range of emotions because that is part of the human experience.
This isn’t my typical genre to read but I enjoyed the lesson, the metaphors, and the use of science and scripture to provide us with the tools to cultivate our own gardens.
This was a timely message, as seasonal depression typically has me feeling every emotion possible. This book reminded me that my body, rather my garden, was made for every cycle and every season. Rather it be nurturing and giving extra care to my greenery during those times or continuing to fortify and fertilize my existence with God’s word until it is time for me to bloom again, I enjoyed all of the reminders from the author to tend to my garden within.
