Madrid, 1957. Under the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spain is hiding a dark secret. Meanwhile, tourists and foreign businessmen flood into Spain under the welcoming promise of sunshine and wine. Among them is eighteen-year-old Daniel Matheson, the son of an oil tycoon, who arrives in Madrid with his parents hoping to connect with the country of his mother's birth through the lens of his camera.
Photography—and fate—introduce him to Ana, whose family's interweaving obstacles reveal the lingering grasp of the Spanish Civil War, as well as the chilling realities of fortune and fear. Daniel's photographs leave him with uncomfortable questions amidst shadows of danger. Lives and hearts collide when he's backed into a corner to protect those he loves, revealing an incredibly dark side to the sunny Spanish city.
Master storyteller Ruta Sepetys once again shines light into one of history's darkest corners in this epic, heart-wrenching novel. Great book, would have been 5 stars but I expected more from the ending.
2.5 stars. I thought the storylines we're very interesting, but they all felt rushed. I felt like I never really got to see enough of each of the characters. I would have liked to see more depth and less dramatic pauses.
I love reading her books.
This one was no different. I was surprised though when I finished the book. It just ended.
But 5/5, 10/10. Love it

I absolutely loved learning about the history of this time period. It always amazes me when I discover party's of history that I never learned about but particularly when some of this was occurring in another part of the world when I was alive. Loved it
Loved this book. Learned about Franco, 400,000 babies sold/adopted. Fascism- Dictatorship. The cost of so many in Spain who had to remain silent
