The Fires of Vengeance (The Burning, 2)

In order to reclaim her throne and save her people, an ousted queen must join forces with a young warrior in the second book of this "relentlessly gripping, brilliant" epic fantasy series from a breakout author (James Islington).

Tau and his Queen, desperate to delay the impending attack on the capital by the indigenous people of Xidda, craft a dangerous plan. If Tau succeeds, the Queen will have the time she needs to assemble her forces and launch an all out assault on her own capital city, where her sister is being propped up as the 'true' Queen of the Omehi.

If the city can be taken, if Tsiora can reclaim her throne, and if she can reunite her people then the Omehi have a chance to survive the onslaught.

Great follow up to TRoD. Definitely thought Hadith was going to die there, but he comes back twice as badass. Jabari is build entirely different, and if there's a live action ever made I really wonder how they'll convey his transformation in a tasteful manner. Can't wait for book 3 to figure out what the cull really is!

I bought this soon after starting to read The Rage of Dragons. I loved the story and knew I needed to buy this so that I could continue without a break. Of course it did not disapoint! I practically inhaled the story without a break... but now here I am, done. Done and without the third novel. It is all fun and games till we must wait for the next book

This felt even more brutal and heart-wrenching than the last one did! This series continues to amaze me at its scope, scale, and intrigue. There were characters from the first book I started to not like in this one, and characters from the first book I didn't really like and started to love in this one. By the end I was on the edge of my seat, can't wait for the next one to come out!

"Rage is love...twisted in on itself . . . . Rage reaches into the world when we can no longer contain the hurt of being treated as if our life and loves do not matter. Rage, and its consequences, are what we get when the world refuses to change for anything else."

An African inspired epic fantasy, The Fires of Vengeance picks up right where The Rage of Dragons left off.

The constant threat of danger really reaches out from the pages to envelope the reader so that your heart rate stays in a constant state of elevation. The indigenous people of Xidda are rising up to scale a major attack on the Omehi. The threat is intense because the Omehi are dealing with its own betrayal as Queen Tsiora's sister is claiming to be the "true" queen of the Omehi.

A dangerous plan of immense risk is plotted out, one that means attacking the capital city, in order to reclaim the throne. The race to claim the throne before the Xiddeen attack will prevent any hope of putting down this book before you reach the end.

The Fires of Vengeance takes the momentum that began in The Rage of Dragons and carries it forward. The action never stops, between the battles and the strategy of trying to retake the throne and stay ahead of the coming onslaught of the Xiddeen - it's intense.

The secondary characters get so much more attention in this book. We really get a chance to get a feel for who they are and the character development evoked the most emotion from me while reading.

One criticism I had from the previous book was that for a setting in a world with women in power, we didn't get much of their voice. Winter definitely made up for that in this story - I love the voice he gave the women, I love the descriptions of them, they just came to live with such beauty and just absolutely regal.

The caste system is explained more and we learn how it came to be. In fact, we explored a lot more of the history of the Omehi and their homeland, which was unexpected, but really helped me feel like I was IN the world with these characters.

Tau matured so much, I love the slow growth of his character over these two books. There are so many ways that Winter used to show Tau's humanity. The magic system - the two planes that it exists on, is just masterfully done. The dragons are shown here in a way that most fantasy novels I've read don't do: they are nothing but sheer destruction. That's why we see them rarely, they literally raze EVERYTHING.
