Aside from Homer, Tolkien is the father of fantasy. He created a world that has changed ours. Fellowship sets the tone for the rest of the trilogy, building a foundation for one of the greatest series of books ever written. The prose is elegant, but the addition of songs and poetry and language helps create a world that is full of life. The vision required to create Middle-Earth is awe inspiring. One thing to note, however, is that Tolkien made revisions with each of the early editions. I read a second edition, which is different from those my children read. Might help avoid arguments when trying to discuss the story with your offspring. It goes without saying that Fellowship of the Ring is highly recommended!
I enjoyed the second half of the book much more than the first. It was still a slow read for me. I found myself having to reread passages, becoming lost in all the details. The maps at the front of the book did little to help orient me. I'm hoping the next book will not be such a tedious read. But before I start I need to rest my weary brain with some light reading!
