Katarina Shaw (Kat), a figure skater who grows up poor, wants to be in the Olympics. As a child, she meets Heath Rocha, a foster kid who keeps coming around her family's home. Heath is also a skater, but not in figure skating. They decide to become a couple, on and off the ice, and this story is their up-and-down relationship through the years through the eyes of a third person documentary and interviews with friends and family. But Kat wants to be able to control the narrative, so she participates in telling her story, from childhood to the end of her career.

Whatâs it about?
Katarina Shaw and Heath Rocha are small-town kids from Illinois with dreams of making it big in the ice-dancing world. But their path is anything but smooth. Ten years after their retirement, an unauthorized documentary airs, uncovering the âreal storyâ.
What did it make me think about?
The world of ice skating is not what it seemsâŚ.
Should I read it?
So this goes in that category of propulsively readable mass-market fiction. Besides being a little long in the middle- this book flies by. I did not know it was possible to have so many twists and turns in one book. As with all twisty suspense-thrillers, you need to put all sensibility aside. This would be a great pick if you are in a reading rut. It would get you turning the pages again, and getting a glimpse into the ice-dancing world was the best part of the book.

âFigure skating is a strange sport, because it depends so much on image and narrative. You have to kill it on the ice, but you also have to look the part and have a compelling story.â

It's a good story. Reminds me of the skating version of Carrie Soto is Back.
A dramatic read with twists and turns and about 100 cliff hangers. We enjoyed the read and all the drama, but feel that we could have traded some of the surprises for a bit more character insight into the other main characters. Even though the main characters are all quite young throughout most of the book, we could have used a bit more consideration or explanation of the motives behind some of their actions to make it feel more believable. The pacing also got very fast towards the end, which made a few of the moves feel even more out of left field. That said, the world building was great! We really got a good feel for the drama of the ice dancing world at a competitive level beyond just the actions of our main characters. Loosely based on Wuthering Heights, it did have a slightly happier ending.
4.5 rounded up... I've already marked my calendar for the 2026 Winter Olympics
