When I received an advance ebook of The Fatal Flame from Netgalley, I promptly ordered copies of the first two books in the series. I was quickly intrigued by the character of Timothy Wilde, a reluctant hero with a penchant for helping the persecuted and mistreated habitants of New York City in the mid-1800s. Each novel focused on a new mystery that the rising NYPD policeman had to solve, while continuing the development of the characters and relationships important to Tim, most importantly his relationship with his brother, Valentine.
In the final installment of the series, Tim must face his greatest fears: Mercy's growing mental instability, Bird's burgeoning independence, and fire. I was satisfied with the ending, with the exception of Tim's love-life. I won't spoil it for others, but I was hoping for a different outcome. Overall, an exciting series that brought to life a time in American history fraught with turmoil, new ideas, and a changing landscape.
