The Eyes of the Cat: The Yellow Edition

In a desolate dreamscape world, a man, a bird, and a cat interact in a unique apocalyptic yet poetic fashion… Alexandro Jodorowsky and Moebius, creators of the Sci-Fi classic "The Incal," initially teamed up on this 1978 gem, where words and images alternate in mesmerizing fashion.

Holy cow. This was such a quick read, but it really packs a punch. The artwork is absolutely superb. I can't stress that enough. The art style is detailed and haunting. It is honestly a bit reminiscent of vintage woodcut art. This style along with the vaguely futuristic/apocalyptic scenes it depicts, creates an interesting blend of futuristic and ancient that serves to take the story out of any specific time period. This comic could be our past or future, or possibly both. It exists at the edge of our concept of time.
Though the art of the entire comic is remarkable, there is a certain page that stood out to me the most. The single frame of the eyeless character holding the cat's eyes in their palms is chilling. It is such a clear and intricate image. I felt as if the character was in the room with me, staring with the soulless darkness that remained in the space where their eyes should be.
As far as the writing goes, it is extremely challenging to write an impactful story with so few words. This comic achieves that goal and goes far beyond. I will remember this story for years to come. 5/5 stars.
