I loved the first book in this series, The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this. It’s been awhile since I've read it though, so I had an internal debate of whether or not to re read it before starting this. I didn't. And I should have. I didn't remember a lot of details. I did however, remember the gist. I remember the confusion on wondering if everything was actually happening or if Mara was just bat shit crazy. And of course, I remember lovin it! One of the things I love most about this is its originality. We’re surrounded by Werewolves, Vampires and Fairies (oh my!) And it’s refreshing to dive into something completely different and all-encompassing.
There is a lot going on here in this installment. It drew me in and held me until the very last page. The main plot surrounds Jude and his sadist actions of torturing Mara, but we are also discovering more about Noah and Mara herself. We now know more about these unique (and frankly, scary) “powers”. Not enough to know the complete ins and outs and whys and hows, but more than we did initially. There are a lot of surprises, twists and turns and not ONCE was I right about the direction of this book. The only thing that threw me off; there were these “before” flash backs or dreams, and I have NO idea where Hodkin is going with that. The ending left us with a cliff hanger, so prepare yourself.
Mara is such a strong character. She often questions her sanity (with good reason) and is dealing with unimaginable things, yet she is still able to go on with her chin held high. She’s funny, loving and loyal. The relationship between Mara and Noah is so sweet. Noah is such a complex character and I love how Mara is breaking down those walls that he carefully crafted. They are just GOOD together. I wish I could have seen more between the two but I was overall OK with their relationship taking a back seat.
Overall I loved it. I’m anxiously anticipating the next book! If you haven’t started this Trilogy, GO ON! Get started, you wont be disappointed.
