Arthur Fletch, one of the world’s bestselling novelists, is a reclusive genius known for his iconic protagonists and fiendish twists. When six struggling authors are invited to spend a weekend on his private Scottish island, they arrive to discover a shocking secret: Arthur Fletch is dead . . . and his last book is unfinished.

Desperate to publish the novel, Fletch’s agent and editor have summoned these writers in the hope that one of them will imagine a worthy ending for this final book. To sweeten the deal, they are offering an irresistible prize: in addition to ghost-writing the last chapter––for a mind-boggling sum––they will also help the lucky writer successfully re-launch their own career, guaranteeing future bestsellers. The catch: the writers have just seventy-two hours to finish Fletch’s magnum opus.

It’s the perfect plot. All it needs is a killer ending.

I’m a VE fan and enjoyed the book! It falls into the cozy, locked room mystery category and I thought it was well done. Nothing beats a wind-blown Scottish island for drama! I enjoyed learning about the characters (liked some much more than others) and especially enjoyed the couple of surprise twists half way through. I would like to have known even more about our culprit and their motivations, but I was pleased with how the book ended.

Book Review: The Ending Writes Itself Synopsis by Goodreads: Six authors. One private island. Seventy-two hours to write the ending that will change their lives. Arthur Fletch, one of the world's bestselling novelists, is a reclusive genius known for his iconic protagonists and fiendish twists. When six struggling authors are invited to spend a weekend on his private Scottish island, they arrive to discover a shocking secret: Arthur Fletch is dead . . . and his last book is unfinished. Desperate to publish the novel, Fletch's agent and editor have summoned these writers in the hope that one of them will imagine a worthy ending for this final book. To sweeten the deal, they are offering an irresistible prize: in addition to ghost-writing the last chapter--for a mind-boggling sum--they will also help the lucky writer successfully re-launch their own career, guaranteeing future bestsellers. The catch: the writers have just seventy-two hours to finish Fletch's magnum opus. It's the perfect plot. All it needs is a killer ending. My review: Going into this novel, I only knew it was a collaboration between V. E. Schwab and Cat Clark, and the synopsis reveals very little about what actually unfolds. In many ways, that worked to the story’s advantage, allowing the mystery and tension to develop without preconceived expectations. Unfortunately, with so much hype surrounding this partnership, I ultimately expected more than the book delivered. The story is told through the perspectives of all the writers attending the retreat, giving readers insight into each character’s motivations, insecurities, and ambitions. The cast is varied and distinctive, with each character bringing their own personality and perspective to the story, creating a strong sense of diversity and individuality. One of the novel’s strongest elements is its atmosphere. The authors do an excellent job capturing the isolated, eerie setting of a secluded Scottish island. The backdrop feels immersive and adds an unsettling edge to the story, especially as tensions among the characters begin to grow. I also enjoyed the literary-world setting. Stories centered around writers, publishing, and creative ambition always carry a unique appeal, and that aspect added an extra layer of intrigue here. Another strength is how effectively it keeps the reader guessing. Until the cast of characters begins to dwindle, it’s nearly impossible to tell who the true villain is, who can be trusted, or even who will survive. The shifting dynamics and uncertainty create a constant sense of tension that keeps the mystery engaging throughout. While the suspense is present throughout, it never fully reaches the level of being truly gripping or impossible to put down. The tension remains steady but mid-level, rather than delivering the kind of edge-of-your-seat momentum the premise promises. Overall, this was a solid read with an engaging setting and memorable characters, but it didn’t quite live up to the excitement and expectations surrounding the collaboration.

I'm trying to think of what I can say that would be no spoilers. Listen, I know we can put the spoilers thing on here, but I just don't ever like to spoil story. So I'll do my best not to say anything to spoilery. There were twists and turns that I enjoyed in this novel. There was one bit that upset me, and a portion that I didn't enjoy that much (though I'm fairly certain you're not supposed to). Other than that, as the pieces fall into place, and the book finally ends, I definitely found that I had enjoyed it.
