From the Bram Stoker-nominated author of The Luminous Dead comes a gothic fantasy horror
The Death of Jane Lawrence.

"A jewel box of a Gothic novel." —New York Times Book Review

“Delicious.... By the time the book reached that point of no return, I was so invested that I would have followed Jane into the very depths of hell.” —NPR.org

“Intense and amazing! It’s like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell meets Mexican Gothic meets Crimson Peak.” —BookRiot

Practical, unassuming Jane Shoringfield has done the calculations, and decided that the most secure path forward is this: a husband, in a marriage of convenience, who will allow her to remain independent and occupied with meaningful work. Her first choice, the dashing but reclusive doctor Augustine Lawrence, agrees to her proposal with only one condition: that she must never visit Lindridge Hall, his crumbling family manor outside of town.

Yet on their wedding night, an accident strands her at his door in a pitch-black rainstorm, and she finds him changed. Gone is the bold, courageous surgeon, and in his place is a terrified, paranoid man—one who cannot tell reality from nightmare, and fears Jane is an apparition, come to haunt him. By morning, Augustine is himself again, but Jane knows something is deeply wrong at Lindridge Hall, and with the man she has so hastily bound her safety to.

Set in a dark-mirror version of post-war England, Caitlin Starling crafts a new kind of gothic horror from the bones of the beloved canon. This Crimson Peak-inspired story assembles, then upends, every expectation set in place by Shirley Jackson and Rebecca, and will leave readers shaken, desperate to begin again as soon as they are finished.

This book was an intriguing read that dealt with themes of love, marriage, faith, and loyalty. With dark magic and a haunted house, this book is great for lovers of the horror genre. One note is that a chapter towards the end makes the plot somewhat confusing, but it's still an enjoyable read.

was into the eerie and unsettling vibes in the first half for a while but around the last third the book became a bit of a slog and lost me

This book started great and right up my alley. I liked the main character, the gothic horror romance vibes were there, the prose was great, I was loving the first two thirds of the book. Then we got to the last third and it just stopped. It got very repetitive but also too packed with events, this book could have done with some plot editing. I did not care for the twist at the end, like I got it but it also came out of nowhere. And then, after that, the author didn't even commit to it. I think the book should have ended with Jane dying, just like the title promised! And after the whole "Jane was always ghost!Elodie" it would have made sense. The ending was too confusing and not in an interesting way.

Read this a few months ago. Though I think some confusion is intended when navigating the plot and events of this novel I think I was a little too confused to grasp some of the contents. Despite that, I had a great time reading it. This novel was incredibly atmospheric - modern gothic writing done right! The only downside was how quickly the two main characters fell in love, as the instant love confessions took me out of the story a little bit because I just found them so sudden and awkward. Otherwise this is a perfect seasonal read!
