George Saunder's explanation of this story in A Swim on a Pond in the Rain helped me appreciate this story so much more, particularly the darker elements at the end that I missed when I read it myself.
Update: It's been a month since I read this, and I think I'm moving into the woman's camp as time passes. I'm hard pressed to think of something better to love in this world than a child, even a child who doesn't especially want your love. Even if that's not what Chekhov intended- he didn't know everything.
