The Crystal Cave (The Arthurian Saga, Book 1)

Born the bastard son of a Welsh princess, Myridden Emrys -- or as he would later be known, Merlin -- leads a perilous childhood, haunted by portents and visions. But destiny has great plans for this no-man's-son, taking him from prophesying before the High King Vortigern to the crowning of Uther Pendragon . . . and the conception of Arthur -- king for once and always.

I would have loved this book as a child. I read everything King Arthur. Now, it was just okay.

The style was not what I enjoy reading, but the story itself was excellent. I found it hard to recognise Merlin in it, but that's no bad thing: new reinterpretations are the best thing for old legends.

I liked it well enough that I'll probably seek out the rest of the series, but not til I've finished with other things. And I'm slightly disappointed as this was recommended to me as one of the better Arthurian stories out there, and I hope that this isn't the case.
