The Crown Tower (The Riyria Chronicles, 1)

Two men who hate each other. One impossible mission. A legend in the making.
Hadrian Blackwater, a warrior with nothing to fight for, is paired with Royce Melborn, a thieving assassin with nothing to lose. Hired by an old wizard, they must steal a treasure that no one can reach. The Crown Tower is the impregnable remains of the grandest fortress ever built and home to the realm's most prized possessions. But it isn't gold or jewels that the wizard is after, and if he can just keep them from killing each other, they just might succeed.

Reading a book written by a male author often ends up as a failure for me. Somehow, I just can't connect as easily as when reading books written by a female author. I'm extremely glad I took the courage to pick this up, because I ended up enjoying this a lot.
It's very interesting to learn of the disparity in character between Hadrian and Royce. They hated each other, and yet were forced to work together. Their interactions were mostly hilarious, and it was nice to see how their friendship began. Arcadius is a smart and scheming old man, and let me just say that I'm glad he's on the good side. He/Hadrian would have been my favourite character in this book were it not for Gwen. Brave, smart Gwen. It takes a lot to be able to survive in those times when women are belittled and seen as nothing but objects, and she was able to surpass it all. I'm really interested to see how she will fare in the company of the two men.
This book is filled with fantastic characters and originality. Every bit of action left me eager for more. Book two, here I come.
