The writing was fairly average. The book alternates between two characters, Dorothea, a wealthy heiress who volunteers at women’s prisons and one of the inmates she meets, Ruth. Dorothea aims to examine Ruth and hear her story in hopes she can be redeemed. She also studies phrenology- a pseudo science that makes no sense to the story. Ruth’s story is tragedy after tragedy I won’t spoil the details. The two characters stories don’t seem to align well. There’s no real character development for Dorothea and her role seems pointless even until the end of the book. The ending is supposed to be a plot twist but it’s poorly executed and ends up confusing the reader. I enjoyed the last quarter of the book, it became a bit more interesting. I really wouldn’t recommend for a solo read but our Bookclubs enjoyed complaining about it and talking about it!
