The Butcher and the Wren: A Novel

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From the co-host of chart-topping true crime podcast Morbid, a thrilling debut novel told from the dueling perspectives of a notorious serial killer and the medical examiner following where his trail of victims leads

Something dark is lurking in the Louisiana bayou: a methodical killer with a penchant for medical experimentation is hard at work completing his most harrowing crime yet, taunting the authorities who desperately try to catch up.

But forensic pathologist Dr. Wren Muller is the best there is. Armed with an encyclopedic knowledge of historical crimes, and years of experience working in the Medical Examiner's office, she's never encountered a case she couldn't solve. Until now. Case after case is piling up on Wren's examination table, and soon she is sucked into an all-consuming cat-and-mouse chase with a brutal murderer getting more brazen by the day.

An addictive read with straight-from-the-morgue details only an autopsy technician could provide, The Butcher and the Wren promises to ensnare all who enter.

Now with an exclusive sneak peek at the highly anticipated sequel!

I mostly picked this book because I loved the Authors podcast so wanted to see what she brought to the table in her writing. The book was alright, it was an easy read. Felt a little elementary, but it was her first book so I still gotta give it up!

I'd say more of a 3.5 on this one. Could definitely tell this was wrote by one of the Morbid ladies as it sounded similar to the podcast. I just wish I would've gotten more out of the book. Will definitely read others as they come out though.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and easy read. The alternating point of views between Wren (M.E.) and the Bayou butcher was suspenseful and kept me engaged. There are some very sharp, well written morbid descriptions that are impossible not to uncomfortably envision. I do like the incorporation of real true crime elements, but their comparison almost makes the butcher seem amateur, which he kind of is. I disliked the lack of character analysis in this book, there is little to none. Also, the conflict of interest Wren has in connection to the case is very unrealistic. She became just as much a burden to the case as she was help in my opinion. Although it was suspenseful, the storyline was often predictable. Especially the ending, which is abrupt, but I understand the open ending when considering the sequel (which I will be reading in hopes of redeeming the predictable ending of this book).
