The Boys from Biloxi: A Legal Thriller

For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Keith Rudy and Hugh Malco grew up in Biloxi in the sixties and were childhood friends, as well as Little League all-stars. But as teenagers, their lives took them in different directions. Keith’s father became a legendary prosecutor, determined to “clean up the Coast.” Hugh’s father became the “Boss” of Biloxi’s criminal underground. Keith went to law school and followed in his father’s footsteps. Hugh preferred the nightlife and worked in his father’s clubs. The two families were headed for a showdown, one that would happen in a courtroom.

Life itself hangs in the balance in The Boys from Biloxi, a sweeping saga rich with history and with a large cast of unforgettable characters.

I had to check this one out twice, as I could not get it listened to on audiobook on one go - life gets in the way. This was a very long read. But it kept me interested in a good guys versus Gulf Coast mafia storyline. Though fiction, there is some basis of reality with activities that occurred in the mid to late twentieth century in Mississippi. I was kept in suspense that the bad guys may have had the last word. The last scene was worth the wait.

It took me a while to get into the story but I’m so glad I stuck with it. Watching the two best friends from youth to adulthood really highlights aspects of the nature vs. nurture theory. Some say the end was anticlimactic however I thought it was subtle but perfect.

I loved how the author tied in the history of Biloxi with this storyline. There is a lot to keep track of so might consider reading when you have the time over a few days timeframe.

I didn’t hate this book but I also didn’t love it. I felt as though the end was very anticlimactic & I also didn’t love the lawyers. They all seemed kind of arrogant and full of themselves and as a lawyer I felt as though they are what give lawyers bad names. There was an interesting premise behind the book but I wasn’t thrilled with the execution of it.
