The Book Haters' Book Club: A Novel

"This sparkling novel starts with high energy and unique characters that move from one surprise to another." --Ann Garvin, USA TODAY bestselling author

All it takes is the right book to turn a Book Hater into a Book Lover...

That was what Elliot--the beloved co-owner of Over the Rainbow Bookshop--believed before his untimely passing. He always had the perfect book suggestion for the self-proclaimed Book Hater. Now his grief-ridden business partner, Irma, has agreed to sell the cozy Over the Rainbow to condo developers.

But others won't give up the bookshop without a fight. When Irma breaks the news to her daughters, Bree and Laney, and Elliot's romantic partner, Thom, they are aghast. Over the Rainbow has been Bree and Laney's sanctuary since childhood, and Thom would do anything to preserve Elliot's legacy. Together they conspire to save the bookshop, even if it takes some snooping, gossip and minor sabotage.

Filled with humor, family hijinks and actual reading recommendations, The Book Haters' Book Club is the ideal feel-good read. It's a love letter to everyday heroes--those booksellers and librarians dedicated to putting the right books in the right hands every day.

This book really disappointed me! The premise sounded fun and I don't mind messy characters, but I had a hard time rooting for any of them. Elliot was selfish and kept things from his partner, Thom. Thom was resentful and really wanted the money out of the sale. Laney was annoying, Irma was cold-hearted and Bree needed to stop crying. Laney and Bree are also 38 years old but acted like children. They got on my nerves so badly that I started feeling like I didn't care about anything.

The "Commercial breaks" really took me out as well. They felt like a filler for story development and it made me dislike Elliot for being so vain and for keeping things from people.

I will agree that the last 100 pages were the most interesting, but I was so done with these characters that I never recovered.

As the reviews on the cover note - this is a feel-good read and I would submit it also offers: affable characters, witty quips, fun nostalgic nods, amusing conversational exchanges as well as the right amount of twists, surprises, and quirky 'turn of event' moments. I appreciated that the author wanted to write an ode to bookshop owners and authors - such a wonderful sentiment - and that I could spend some time in a local neighborhood in Minneapolis - :) The literary devices were entertaining (*more newsletters please!) and while I did find some of the plot predictable it was overall a light and lovely read.
