The Ballad of Falling Dragons (Standard Edition): A Sequel – A Sweeping Fantasy Romance of Ancient Magic and a Love Worth Dying For (The Moonfall Series, 2)

By Sarah A. Parker

The Ballad of Falling Dragons is the much-anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestselling phenomenon When the Moon Hatched, featuring an immersive, vibrant world with mysterious creatures, a unique magic system, and a love that blazes through the ages.

“Moonbeam. A moonfall is coming.”

Raeve’s thirst for vengeance continues to burn, as does her love for Kaan Vaegor—a staunch beacon from a past she’s yet to face. With Rekk’s blood still fresh on her hands, she learns the world will face its most devastating moonfall yet, forcing her to pick a path:

Chase death.

Or life.

Desperate to save his kingdom from ruin, Kaan’s crown has never felt so heavy. His many larks to scattered friends and family remain unanswered, and time is running out.

As allies merge and enemies surge with bloodlusting agendas of their own, secrets brew hot enough to burn, but none so mighty as the truth nesting within the icy depths of Raeve’s long forgotten past.

Something … Other.

Something with the knowledge to change it all.

Sarah A. Parker has done it again. The Ballad of Falling Dragons is everything I hoped a sequel would be and somehow still exceeded my expectations. I laughed, gasped, and cried. I spent an embarrassing amount of time staring at my wall after certain chapters because my brain needed a minute to catch up with what had just happened. The story reunites readers with Raeve and Kaan as moonfall inches closer and the fate of the kingdoms hangs in the balance, but it also expands the story in exciting new directions. One of my favorite additions was getting to know their daughter, Kyzari. Watching her powers awaken was mesmerizing. Every scene with her felt like standing too close to a lightning strike. Beautiful, terrifying, and impossible to turn away from. This installment trades some of the romance-heavy focus of the first book for court politics, ancient secrets, and shifting alliances. I loved that choice. Parker trusts her readers to keep up as kingdoms collide, loyalties fracture, and long-buried truths begin clawing their way to the surface. I never hit a lull because every chapter felt like another domino falling toward catastrophe. Kaan and Raeve continue to set the standard for fantasy romance. Kaan never asks Raeve to shrink herself to make him comfortable. He loves her because she is fierce, complicated, and capable of burning the world down if she has to. Their relationship feels like a partnership in every sense. Their chemistry is still off the charts. One particular spicy scene had me wondering if I need to add swimming in the ocean to my relationship bucket list. Arkyn is the kind of villain I wish we saw more often. He is not a tortured antihero. There is no hidden softness waiting to be uncovered. He is just a manipulative and calculating monster who made my blood pressure spike every time he appeared on the page. I wanted to see his downfall so bad. I experienced this as an immersion read with both the audiobook and the special edition hardcover. It felt less like reading a novel and more like watching an epic fantasy film unfold in my head. I kept pausing to process another reveal or mourn another devastating loss. Sarah A. Parker has built a world so vivid that leaving it feels almost impossible. The full cast did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life. I still prefer duet narration over dual narration. With a cast this large because I occasionally had to rewind conversations to figure out who was speaking. I also pictured Kaan with a deeper voice than Fajer Al-Kaisi's performance. Though that comes down entirely to my own imagination rather than the quality of his narration. Pick this up if you love dragons, devastating plot twists, fantasy politics that demand your full attention, and romances built on unwavering devotion. Sarah A. Parker isn't just writing romantasy anymore. She's building one of the most ambitious fantasy worlds on shelves today. I already know the wait for book three is going to be unbearable.]
