I'm reading the series a little differently than intended and started with this prequel/novella collection. I'm already super invested in the main character. The last novella was gut-wrenchingly devastating. Probably hits a little differently reading it this way rather than already knowing what happens after this. I also liked that the each story interconnected and that they aren't necessarily stand-alone.

Let's talk more SJM! This is the prequel to the Throne of Glass series and there's a lot of controversy as to when this one should be read in comparison to the other books. Unfortunately I didn't get into Bookstagram fast enough because I ended up reading this one last. I think there were some nice parts to having not known some details while reading the series, but I do really wish I read this one sooner because it gives so much context as to who Celaena is.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ i read the assassin’s blade first and honestly im so happy with that choice! it set the tone so well. getting to see celaena at her most confident, before everything goes off the rails, made me feel everything so much deeper later on. she’s arrogant, reckless, clever and already carrying more than she lets on. this book gave me a full picture of who she is and who she’s about to become. each novella built on the last, layering in tension, heartbreak, and a slow unraveling that had me hooked. the final one was emotionally devastating. i can see how sam will continue to haunt the narrative in the coming books. the betrayal, the setup, and the way it all crashed down at the end was devastating. as a first read, this was such a strong intro into the world—fast-paced, rich with detail, and full of sharp, emotional moments. the assassin’s blade made me care way too fast and hurt way too soon, but i loved every second of it.

Even though you know the ending it is still painful to read. This series has been good!
