⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ I was a bit skeptical of how this book would do on my scales of enjoyment, but I am pained and pleasantly surprised that it did well!
It was special to see the development of Celaena’s character in these background stories, and the eventual come around she had to Sam. It was painful and beautiful to read her exchanges with Arobynn, who groomed and manipulated her to his benefit and intentionally hurt her so deeply when she started to break away and see him for what he was, and how pivotal moments in her training (Red Sands, Skull’s Bay) paved the way for her later in the series.
I thought it was a special detail to have her interact with Chaol and Dorian at the ball, unbeknownst to her, and the betrayal of Chaol now feels so much deeper and more painful knowing that she linked him with Sam, in a way, only to have it torn away AGAIN.
It is pretty special that the author does not shy away from the brutality and harsh realities of what was ‘normal’ in this fictional timeframe, which feels like that of medieval age, her development of Celaena’s story and overall character is a refreshing change from that of heroine Violet in a separate world; Celaena went from being arrogant and self serving to knowing her flaws and recognizing the bigger issues required a standing bigger than herself, even when that meant breaking away from all she knew (the Guild) and risking her heart and life.
I hope Celaena has some retribution soon, the constant struggle on her part and the straight up pain and heartbreak she’s continuously enduring is hard to read. I just want her to have her happy ending: peace, proper grief for Sam, some sense of her own self.
