Celeana is the queen of the underworld—" exotic, beguiling, and imperious". The narrative unfolds through five interconnected storylines: The Assassin and the Pirate Lord: When Celeana is sent to meet the Pirate King to discuss a slave trade, she defies direct orders and forges a friendship with Sam. Arobynn interprets her defiance as disrespect, brutally punishing her before sending her to the mute masters. The Assassin and the Healer: On her journey to the Red Sand Mountains, she encounters a girl in a pub. After saving her, Celeana instills confidence in her and hints at the presence of magic, a theme that remains largely unexplored. The Assassin and the Desert: After parting ways with the girl, Celeana continues to the Red Desert, where she is betrayed by someone she had trusted and developed a rapport with. However, she earns the respect of the mute master and returns home to Arobynn with newfound clarity about her identity and the obstacles she must overcome to gain her freedom. The Assassin and the Underworld: Back with Arobynn, Celeana presents the mute master’s letter of approval and reconnects with Sam. Their love flourishes, leading her to purchase their freedom so they can live together. Together, they begin taking on under the table assassin work, only for her to face a shocking betrayal. The Assassin and the Empire: Ultimately, Celeana finds herself imprisoned in Erilea, her heart shattered as the freedom she envisioned slips away. The book is filled with highs and lows, showcasing significant character development while leaving much of the world building still to explore. Celeana's strength and credibility shine through; as the queen of the underworld, she commands both respect and fear from all who know her name. A tear jerker near the end!!!
