The Alchemy of Stone

By Ekaterina Sedia

  • Mattie, an intelligent automaton skilled in the use of alchemy, finds herself caught in the middle of a conflict between gargoyles, the Mechanics, and the Alchemists. With the old order quickly giving way to the new, Mattie discovers powerful and dangerous secrets -- secrets that can completely alter the balance of power in the city of Ayona. This doesn't sit well with Loharri, the Mechanic who created Mattie and still has the key to her heart -- literally.

The thing that got me throughout this story was the tenderness that Ekaterina Sedia had for Mattie, the main character. Her emotions were raw and real, and it actually moved me. Mattie is an intelligent female automaton who is emancipated, but remains dependent on her creator (a man who still holds the key that winds her heart and keeps her going).

This is definitely a book about tradition vs. progress, but I was more taken by the message speaking against enslavement and violation that came about because Mattie was viewed as someone who was worth less than a human, much in the way other victims of such abuses can be viewed. I found some of it profoundly disturbing, not because of graphic violence, but by implied violence against women. It is extremely well done and there is a real story rather than just a thinly veiled soapbox for the author to stand upon as can be the case with other books with a message.
